Harku 330 kV substation main power transformer replacement

Project No. 90 · Elering AS
2024 Year of completion
Harku 330 kV substation main power transformer replacement
Harku, Harku municipality, Estonia

Supply, logistics and installation of the 200 MVA main power transformer at Harku 330/110 kV substation — one of the key nodes of the Estonian power system. This is the largest transformer installed in Estonia, weighing over 200 tonnes with oil.

Harku substation is one of three 330 kV main grid nodes in Estonia, through which electrical energy is directed between the Baltic and Nordic countries via the Finland submarine cable. The 200 MVA power transformer with voltage levels 330/110/20 kV forms the core of this node.

The previous unit had been installed in 1987, and diagnostics revealed winding insulation damage. The new ABB transformer weighed over 130 tonnes without oil, requiring road reinforcement to the substation and the use of a special railway platform for transport.

Our team coordinated the entire logistics chain from Switzerland to Tallinn and performed installation, vacuum-method oil filling, drying, and all IEC 60076 standard-compliant factory and on-site acceptance tests. This project is the largest delivery carried out by Energel Estonia to date.
