At Viljandi substation in Viljandimaa, two 40 MVA power transformers were replaced in the 110 kV distribution system, upgrading the city and county electrical infrastructure. The modernized substation ensures improved energy efficiency and modern remote monitoring capability.
Viljandi substation is the central hub of Viljandimaa power supply, serving both Viljandi city and surrounding municipalities. Replacing older-generation transformers with modern, higher-efficiency units means significantly lower energy losses and reduced maintenance requirements. Two 40 MVA units provide the region with redundant supply, which the daily load distribution between city and county demands.
During the project, old equipment was dismantled, foundations were prepared, new transformers were installed, and digital protection and automation systems were integrated. Work was carried out in phases to avoid prolonged outages for the population. After full-scale commissioning, both units were connected to operational service, and updated equipment documentation was handed over to the substation.
